Volunteer Hours and the Meaning of Service

Posted on July 30, 2026July 5, 2026 By Editor

Many schools require volunteer hours, which can make service feel like another box to check. Students ask how many hours they need, not always who they are helping or why the work matters.

Required service is not automatically bad. It can introduce students to communities and issues they might never encounter on their own. Some students continue volunteering after the requirement ends.

But service becomes shallow when it is only about documentation. Taking photos, collecting signatures, and counting hours can distract from listening and learning. Communities should not feel like props for student resumes.

Schools can improve service by helping students reflect, build long-term relationships, and choose work connected to real needs. Students should ask what the organization actually wants, not just what looks impressive.

The best volunteer work changes more than a transcript. It changes how students see responsibility, privilege, and the people around them.
